Thanks to CARE Society for conducting a session to “Creating Awareness on United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with a Disability(UNCRPD) & disAbilityLaw 8/2010“. It brought a lot of professionals from our community dealing with disAbility and highlighted the need to meet up frequently to work together and create a better Maldives for Persons with disAbilities. I hope more similar platforms would be created in the future and am looking forward for the next disAbility forum by the Disability Council on 3rd December(disAbility day 2011).

My Notes on Parents perspective into coming in to terms of having a child with a disAbility

I was invited to the workshop on disAbility by Handicap International and Ministry of Health to give a short presentation on a parent’s perspective on coming in to terms of having a child with a disAbility. Here are the notes I highlighted.

“I am Mohammed Yasiph, father of Yafaau who was born on January 4th 2003 at IGMH. At birth he suffered oxygen starvation(Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy or HIE) and as a result, has Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Visual Impairment.

I’d like to thank the Minister of Health on pointing out the “Welcome to Holland” story as it was where I too got inspiration and sharing it explains how a parent feels about their child’s disAbility.

Perhaps, one of the harshest realities an individual may have to face in life is the knowledge that his child has a disAbility. In tragic situations which involve the loss of a loved one, the most common reassurance is that time is a greater healer. So I too had this feeling that things will be alright in a year or two. But it was Yafaau’s physiotherapist at IGMH who made me realize that things will not be the same. Things will not be normal in time. The opposite is true when you have to deal with a very real problem.

Coming into terms of having a child with a disAbility as one of the comments from the Principal of Giyasuddin School pointed out that parents has difficulty in facing the reality even thought they are informed of the possible diagnosis.

Report on the Forum on Disability meeting published on MVdisability

This is a report by CFPA of Min. of Gender and Family on the “Forum on Disability” held on 29th July 2008 in which I was invited as a Parent of a child with a disAbility. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Min. of Gender and Family and their consultant, Ms Joanna Champion for the Invitation and giving an opportunity to voice out how a parent feels in having a child with a disAbility, especially with the heads of ministries present. I would also like to thank Minister of Gender and Family, Aishath Mohamed Didi for mentioning about Yafaau”s website on her speech.
